This morning on the way to work I happened to hear part of an interview on NPR with Elizabeth Edwards. It was a great interview and you can hear it here for yourself. At the very end of the interview Elizabeth reads about her childhood memories of the Obon festivals she experienced while her family was stationed in Japan. The transcript for the interview is in the works but until then, just go and listen. You’ll be glad you did - at least to the last part.
I’ve been talking about the “sparkling life” here for a while - and I think that spirituality is a big portion of feeling as if your life is sparkling. The sense of feeling connected to something greater than yourself - a higher power - is uplifting and before you know it you’re sparking all over the place. I feel this sense of BIG-ness looking at the skyscrapers as I get out of my car - the cooperative work and thought that went into those buildings. I get that feeling sometimes when I am in heavy but flowing traffic - the power of combined force of the all the cars all moving together in a direction…highway Qi or ch’i. It’s in Nina’s video too - when she gets carried away and has to take her hands off the piano. And like last night when my friend David and I saw a huge group of birds flying in formation against the backdrop of an approaching thunderhead. The hundreds of birds flew linked together by bio-magic - their combined motion looked as haphazard as a single butterfly in flight.

Those birds were beautiful, as were the ones on the other side of the street - over the church - that weren’t flying together at all, but just happened to be in the same place doing the same thing.
