Washing Away My Troubles

November 9th, 2006 · 8 Comments

washerThere are lots of depressing things that I could write about, but they’re, um, depressing. So, instead, I’ll go shopping! Friends, I need to buy a new washer (and dryer?) for the new apartment.

I’d like your help. Have you purchased a washer in Israel? Let me hear your opinions! I need a small front loading washer similar to the one in the picture. Nothing too fancy (read expensive) but a good, durable machine that gets our clothes clean.

You always get eitzos from people you didn’t ask … I really recommend you buy a more expensive German machine– Miele, Bosch or AEG. And whatever you buy, one which has a good variety of cool wash and short wash cycles. I had a Bosch that did all that in my previous house, which I moved out of in the summer. It was quiet, economical, did a fantastic wash job and was hugely reliable. I was foolish enough to be tempted by the offer of the free washer-dryer in my new home and sold off my Bosch for what seemed a good price. Aarrgh. The machine I’ve acquired doesn’t have a wash cool enough to do silk or woollens, which I have plenty of. There’s no short wash and the main wash takes forever. The dryer function is awful, inefficient and makes a horrible chemical smell. It must use huge amounts of energy for not very good results. Think about that — you may end up saving far more in water and electricity bills if you buy a good quality high end machine. Plus the noise/reliability issue….This is the first and last washer-dryer I have acquired. I now realise why other people who have washer-dryers have an awful lot of washing drying over radiators. You can alway stack a dryer on a washer….

Thanks, Judy. I seriously want to hear personal experiences - so thanks! Anyone else?! :)

AEG definitely. Little workhorses. And definitely get the dryer if you can afford it and have space for it. It saves time, keeps your apartment from looking like a chinese laundry and best of all –sooooo best of all –is in the deep winter when it is colder inside than out and with such humidity that things that are dry feel like they are wet, tossing your clothes for a 5 minute spin in the dryer in the morning and pulling them on warm and toasty starts your day off on a much better foot!

on the one hand, my mom has had aeg appliances since my brother was born - he’s now 28 - and she just chucked them out a year or two ago, not because they didn’t work, but because she was bored with them! dishwasher, washer and dryer.

on the other hand, we went to odafim - there are branches all over, and we also went to an electrical goods shop on a kibbutz somewhere near Kfar Yona (maybe Y recognises it), and we ended up buying a Zanussi washer for 900 sheks (because it had a ding - it would have been a few hundred more without the ding), and it has worked most faithfully for a year and a half now.

    good luck!

Here is a october 2006 test of front loaders, first name and nr, second average price and third the score on a scale from 1-100 (prices are in Lowlands €)

    Miele W3521 1050 66
    AEG Lavamat 62800 600 64
    Electrolux Washy Talky
    EWF 1444 870 64
    Edy W-212 330 63
    Bosch WAE 28460NL 650 63
    Siemens WM14E46NL 650 63
    AEG Lavamat 64800 680 63
    Indesit WIL 142 330 61
    Indesit WIL 145 350 61
    Marijnen CMF Florijn 430 61
    Electrolux EWF 1420 550 60
    Candy GO 126-14 400 59
    ZAnussi ZWF 1410
    Trentino 400 59
    Indesit WIL 125 330 59
    Whirlpool Senseline 1200 400 58
    AEG Lavamat 52600 480 58
    Bauknecht WAK 8666 700 55
    LG WD -1238 FBN 400 44

One should not be too much fixated on a name, LG, Whirlpool and Siemens belong to the Philips-
pool, with all this competition the average machine is a combination of parts from all over the world.

We just baought a new washer this August. It’s a Crystal something something. Not so high end, but very good. It’s economic, has a good variety of programs, and a spin cycle of up to 800RPM, which saves us a whole bunch in drying time (and electric bills on drying). We bought it at some online auction and ended up saving about 30% of the store price. If you do buy things online, I recommend midday weekdays, because then there are less bidders and prices tend to be much lower.

    Hey,
Good spin is really important (they call it ’salat’ or something which made me chuckle). Go into a shop to choose and then buy it for cheaper on zap.co.il!
    Good luck!
